In over fifty years of artistic career, Matt Mullican (Santa Monica, 1951) has developed a vocabulary and a system of signs and symbols that offer a polyhedric vision of the universe. Systematization, structure and order of his vision of the world, ranging from personal to universal, are central themes in his production.\r\n\r\nTHE SIGN IS THE CIRCLE is a special collaborative project with Madrid based gallery 1MiraMadrid. To the gallery\u2019s initiative to host a one-time show with Matt Mullican, we came up with the idea to develop \u201cone only\u201d exhibition split in two cities. One held at ProjecteSD in Barcelona, the other at 1MiraMadrid. One same show, one same idea. Two different venues, different works in each gallery. As \u00c1lvaro de los Angeles points out in the text he wrote for the exhibition: \u201cThis double exhibition functions like an addition of free-standing and irreplaceable parts\u201d.\r\n\r\nThe figure of the \u201ccircle\u201d runs through Mullican\u2019s work since the beginning of his career in the mid 70\u2019s. The exhibition is, thus, a look into the artist\u2019s view of the world through the \u201ccircle\u201d.
