Des d\u2019inicis de la d\u00e8cada dels vuitanta ha dut a terme una obra f\u00edlmica i te\u00f2rica que es considera fundacional per als plantejaments postcolonials i feministes i que ha despla\u00e7at de manera significativa els l\u00edmits entre document i ficci\u00f3: s\u2019enquadra dins la complexa categoria de \u00abcinema etnogr\u00e0fic experimental\u00bb.\r\n\r\nDespr\u00e9s d\u2019emigrar als Estats Units l\u2019any 1970, durant la guerra del Vietnam, a partir del 1977 va impartir classes al Conservatori Nacional de M\u00fasica i Art Dram\u00e0tic de Dakar (Senegal). D\u2019aquesta \u00e8poca daten la publicaci\u00f3 <em>African Spaces: Designs for Living in Upper Volta<\/em> (1985), juntament amb el fot\u00f2graf i arquitecte Jean-Paul Bourdier, aix\u00ed com les seves dues primeres peces en 16 mm, <em>Reassemblage<\/em> (1982) i <em>Naked Spaces - Living Is Round<\/em> (1985), ambdues produ\u00efdes per Bourdier, igual que la resta de la seva filmografia.
