Conegut com el Poble Nou del Mar fins que va ser annexionat a la ciutat el 1897, com a antic poble mariner es caracteritza per conservar el sistema urb\u00e0 reticular propi de la parcel\u00b7laci\u00f3 i les alienacions paral\u00b7leles al mar de les antigues barraques de pescadors, les \"cabanyes\" que li van donar el nom. En substituci\u00f3 de les antigues construccions, les cases baixes que es van anar construint eren d\u2019un estil ecl\u00e8ctic fruit d\u2019una reinterpretaci\u00f3 popular dels diferents estils del moment, com el modernisme, l\u2019historicisme i el racionalisme.\r\n\r\nEl 1993, el Cabanyal va ser declarat B\u00e9 d\u2019Inter\u00e8s Cultural per la Generalitat Valenciana, en reconeixement del seu valor arquitect\u00f2nic i hist\u00f2ric, per\u00f2 tamb\u00e9 social, ja que la singularitat d\u2019aquelles cases va afavorir una cultura pr\u00f2pia, amb una vida molt connectada al carrer i un fort sentiment d\u2019identitat. Segons la llei patrimonial, aix\u00f2 implicava crear un pla especial de protecci\u00f3 que en garant\u00eds la conservaci\u00f3, per\u00f2 el 1998, tan sols cinc anys despr\u00e9s, l\u2019Ajuntament de Val\u00e8ncia, llavors governat pel Partit Popular, va anunciar un pla de remodelaci\u00f3 urban\u00edstica per crear-hi un bulevard, ampliant l\u2019avinguda de Blasco Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez uns 800 metres per fer-la arribar fins al mar. Aquesta actuaci\u00f3 tan agressiva, que afectava una de les zones m\u00e9s antigues i partia el barri en dos, implicava l\u2019enderrocament de m\u00e9s de 1.600 habitatges. Les reaccions contestat\u00e0ries no es van fer esperar. La gent del barri va crear la plataforma ciutadana Salvem el Cabanyal<\/strong>, i una forta oposici\u00f3 p\u00fablica, encap\u00e7alada per professionals de la cultura i t\u00e8cnics especialistes en mat\u00e8ria urbana, va denunciar no nom\u00e9s la destrucci\u00f3 del patrimoni arquitect\u00f2nic i l\u2019esquin\u00e7ament de la trama urbana, sin\u00f3 tamb\u00e9 les nefastes conseq\u00fc\u00e8ncies per a les condicions de vida dels seus habitants i la seva cohesi\u00f3 social.\r\n\r\nEn el moment \u00e0lgid del conflicte, el 2005, la plataforma Salvem el Cabanyal va convidar Patricia G\u00f3mez<\/strong> i Mar\u00eda Jes\u00fas Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>. Entre la intervenci\u00f3 art\u00edstica i la conservaci\u00f3 del patrimoni, la pr\u00e0ctica d\u2019aquestes artistes valencianes fa vint-i-dos anys que consisteix a rescatar espais immersos en processos de desaparici\u00f3 o aband\u00f3. Seg\u00fan la ley patrimonial, ello implicaba crear un plan especial de protecci\u00f3n que garantizase su conservaci\u00f3n, pero en 1998, tan solo cinco a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, el Ayuntamiento de Valencia, en aquel entonces gobernado por el Partido Popular, anunci\u00f3 un plan de remodelaci\u00f3n urban\u00edstica para crear un bulevar, ampliando la avenida de Blasco Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez unos 800 metros para hacer que llegara hasta el mar. Esta actuaci\u00f3n tan agresiva, que afectaba a una de las zonas m\u00e1s antiguas y part\u00eda el barrio en dos, implicaba el derribo de m\u00e1s de 1600 viviendas. Las reacciones contestatarias no se hicieron esperar. The Cabanyal neighbourhood is a group of fishermen\u2019s houses located about three kilometres east of Valencia\u2019s old quarter. It was originally part of the old fishing village known as Poble Nou del Mar until it was annexed to the city in 1897. As such, it has an urban grid system typical of the parcelling and parallel alignment with the sea of the old fishermen\u2019s huts, the \"cabanyes\" that gave the area its name. Replacing the old constructions, low houses were built that were of an eclectic design, the result of a popular reinterpretation of the different styles of the time, such as modernism, historicism and rationalism.<\/p>\r\n

In 1993, Cabanyal was declared a Cultural Asset of Interest by the Generalitat Valenciana in recognition of its architectural and historical value but also its social value, given that the singularity of the houses favoured a culture of its own, with a life closely connected to the street and a strong sense of identity. According to property law, this meant creating a Special Protection Plan to guarantee its conservation but in 1998, just five years later, the Valencia City Council, then governed by the conservative party, PP, announced an urban redevelopment plan to create a boulevard, extending Avinguda Blasco Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez by 800 metres so that it reached the sea. This aggressive proposal, which affected one of the oldest areas and split the neighbourhood in two, involved the demolition of more than 1600 houses. Reactions were not long in coming. People from the neighbourhood created the citizens\u2019 platform Salvem el Cabanyal<\/strong> and a strong public opposition, led by cultural professionals and technical specialists in urban matters, denounced not only the destruction of the architectural heritage and the tearing up of the urban fabric but also the harmful consequences for the living conditions of its inhabitants and their social cohesion.<\/p>\r\n

At the height of the conflict, in 2005, the Salvem el Cabanyal platform called upon Patricia G\u00f3mez<\/strong> and Mar\u00eda Jes\u00fas Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>. Between artistic intervention and heritage conservation, the work of the Valencian artists, who began their practice twenty-two years ago, consists of rescuing spaces immersed in processes of disappearance or abandonment.
