Performance event featuring Neil Harbisson, Carla Piris, Pol Ponsarnau, Enric Punsola and Pía Sommer, inspired by Toni Cabré’s play ‘Shadows of Memory’.
Mataró-born writer Toni Cabré created “Shadows of Memory” based on family testimonies. The play was published in 2021 and was recently staged at the Espai Saleta of Sala Cabanyes.
Among other events from the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, the play recounts the murder of the parish priest of Santa Maria, an episode that arguably marks the most tragically significant date in the history of the Prison: 1st September 1936.
M|A|C has invited five visual artists to attend the play and create an intervention inspired by this historical moment, each from their own perspective and artistic discipline. The aim of the project is to foster reflection on historical memory, the fragility of democratic coexistence, and the collective responsibility to preserve the events of the past without simplification or forgetting.
The participating artists are Neil Harbisson (a cyborg artist working with artificial intelligence), Carla Piris (dancer and choreographer), Pol Ponsarnau (filmmaker), Enric Punsola (visual artist working with gunpowder), and Pía Sommer (sound artist).
In this context, the Mataró Prison once again becomes a space where historical memory and contemporary art converge, presenting artistic perspectives that may raise more questions than answers.
