Buhayin ang Baybayin (Revive the Baybayin)

Activity of the exhibition Whispers, Hubbub, and Paradoxes

With Espai Kapwa (Marlon B. Quintero and Gemma Ferreón)

Workshop on revitalization of pre-colonial Philippine baybayin calligraphy. Before the Spanish colonisation and the imposition of the Latin script, the peoples of the islands had their own abugida, or syllabary alphabet, system. This system was connected to the environment: the sounds, the sea, the waves and the shells. The revitalisation of our calligraphy is one of the forms of resistance to colonialism and imperialism that the Filipinx diaspora have been using for the last decade. We will explain its history and current practice and will experiment with different methods to materialise this writing.
