Counterpoint. Sergi Aguilar
Sergi Aguilar (Barcelona, 1946) has been developing a photographic practice that runs parallel to his productions in the field of sculpture ever since the beginning of his career in the early 1970s. These images can now be seen as a profound exploration of some of the main themes that have concerned the artist. For example, the emptiness or sutures in landscape, buildings understood from their barest volumes, framing that isolates and defines, or the tensions between appearance, seriality and presence.
Taking its title from a Don DeLillo essay, Counterpoint presents for the first time in monographic form an exhaustive selection of photographs together with a few audiovisual works. It should be noted that Aguilar has tried to break the spatial axes and hierarchical codes that determine certain ways of looking at the image with the way the exhibition has been presented. On the contrary, the exhibition recreates a type of visual experience that is more akin to that which takes place in the artist’s studio.
