The Garden of Earthly Delights. Anna Rierola

Inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s masterpiece The Garden of Earthly Delights, this installation is composed of hundreds of scientific images drawn from the field of biomedicine. Produced using advanced microscopy techniques, these images reveal the invisible landscapes of life: molecules, cells, tissues, and organisms woven into complex networks of interdependence. Artist Anna Rierola transforms scientific imagery into a visual language that invites viewers to immerse themselves in this hidden universe and reflect on the processes that sustain life.

The installation comprises two large-scale works — Eden and Hell — alongside sixteen screens projecting moving-image fragments. While the monumental still images offer a panoramic view, the screens reveal the extraordinary beauty and complexity of biological structures, presenting life as an open, dynamic process in constant transformation.

Just as cells make organisms possible, individuals shape society. Through this parallel, the work invites us to reflect on our responsibility within the web of life and poses a fundamental question: how can we preserve the balance of this garden so that nature may continue to regulate itself and sustain the lives of all species, now and for future generations?
