Concert

A short concert to commemorate the centennial of the birth of Antoni Tàpies, performed by Andrea Pérez and Carlos Isla, students at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). The musicians will play Ko-Lho (1966) by Giacinto Scelsi on flute and clarinet. The activity will take place in the hall that displays two works by Tàpies, Black and White Landscape I (1985) and Two Black Crosses (1973), as part of the exhibition entitled MACBA Collection: Prelude. Poetic Intention.

Whenever Antoni Tàpies went from his painting studio on Saragossa Street in Barcelona to his studio in his country house in Campins, he brought a suitcase full of LPs of the time that he continued changing and updating based on his personal interests and the musical trends of the time. Although Tàpies only focused on one thing at a time, that is when he painted, he painted, and when he listened to music, he listened to music, he was a great music lover, a passion that he picked up from a very young age.

After the painter’s death, Miquel Tàpies, the artist’s youngest child, listed the content from one of the suitcases with the goal of creating a playlist that included several 20th century classics: A. Webern, A. Schönberg, G. Scelsci, G. Ligeti, I. Xenakis, M. Feldman, J. Cage, P. Boulez, and more.
