The Creative Universe of Leonardo Escoda Resonates Within the Walls of Lo Pati

Lo Pati’s first exhibition of the season is dedicated to the abstract painter Leonardo Escoda and will launch a series of events exploring the artistic and cultural legacy of this contemporary artist from Tortosa, who passed away in 2022. Curated by Lo Pati’s director, Aida Boix Grau, “Sentir Música Callada” will showcase thirty-two paintings that offer a profound pictorial reflection on refinement, silence, and synthesis in art.

The pieces on display at Lo Pati were created during the COVID-19 pandemic and reflect the emotions the artist experienced during that period: restlessness, solitude, introspection, and the rediscovery of literature and music. The exhibition serves as both a reinterpretation and an expansion of “Música Callada”, which was previously displayed in 2022 at the Poblet Monastery.

With these works, Escoda reaches the peak of his artistic career, embracing a contemporary painting approach that strips away superfluous and narrative elements, bringing the art to its purest essence. The titles of the pieces reference musicians, artists, and poets who left a significant mark on his work. Figures such as John Cage, Carles Santos, Frederic Mompou, Miles Davis, Marcel Duchamp, Friedrich Hölderlin, Rainer Maria Rilke, Charles Baudelaire, and Paul Celan not only serve as inspirations but also create a biographical and creative map of the painter. Each title suggests an influence, a dialogue between disciplines, and a path that shapes his artistic exploration. The exhibition’s title, inspired by a composition by Frederic Mompou, is a deliberate and meaningful choice.

These works are characterized by their multi-layered construction yet minimal brushstrokes. This process of refinement and synthesis is not only a plastic exploration but also a way to delve into the minimalism of white-on-white. “Sentir Música Callada” documents this creative journey, from its conception to its realization, offering insight into how the artist envisioned his own evolution.

The exhibition will be open from March 15 to June 1 and will feature complementary activities, a music concert, and the publication of a catalog on the artist’s work and career. “Sentir Música Callada” is part of the 2025 program “Mira Leonardo”, an initiative that includes exhibitions, roundtable discussions, educational activities, poetry recitals, dance performances, and concerts. This project is made possible through the collaboration of various institutions, organizations, and individuals from the Tarragona region, as well as the family of Leonardo Escoda.
