Open Studio: Daniela Serna / 29 Juliol
On Wednesday, July 29, Colombian artist Daniela Serna opens her research process to the public and presents the works developed during her one-month artist residency at Homesession, Barcelona.
Her artistic practice focuses on the relativity of language, reading as a performative act, and the social systems that are shaped through discourse. This has led her to understand literature—and texts more broadly—not as closed entities, but as open territories of movement and friction, where the individual, the content, and the context are all subject to a set of rules derived from the symbolic forms that constitute our cultural tradition.
From this perspective, the word has become a plastic and malleable material, capable of being transformed, reconfigured, and expanded into new narratives. In this sense, her work has evolved from the book as an object of visual and conceptual inquiry toward spatial and installation-based experimentation through mechanisms and devices that invite viewers to approach reading through a different bodily experience.
More recently, her practice has increasingly embraced formal dematerialization, allowing her to question the reader’s body, the performativity of reading, and the notion of rewriting as a creative act. From this standpoint, she has become interested in exploring the visual, sonic, and rhythmic dimensions of text; emptiness and silence as forms of enunciation; the relationship between time, body, and reading; translation as a creative practice; and the institutional critique that emerges from the modes of production and circulation of works of art.
