Rethinking the Museum, Envisioning Futures

The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya is launching the public program MNAC in Transformation, a space for collective reflection and debate to share and bring transparency to its expansion process — a project that will strengthen the Museum’s public function and open up new forms of relationship with citizens.

From October 2026 to November 2027, participants in the various sessions of the conversation series Thinking the Museum, Imagining Futures will discuss the role of museums in the face of the social, cultural, technological, economic, and environmental transformations that define our century. This series will bring together some of the most influential museum directors and architects on the contemporary cultural scene, linked to major cultural and architectural projects and with direct experience in transformation processes comparable to the one the Museu Nacional is undertaking.

Drawing on the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya’s firm commitment to public service, the participants in this series will speak, from a critical perspective, about new museum models, the role of national museums in a globalized world, architecture as a driver of institutional transformation, governance and accountability, innovation in cultural management, new technologies, emerging audiences, sustainability, and culture’s contribution to contemporary urban and social challenges.
