Through technological acceleration and ease, we have entered a moment of profound transformation in the global art system. A large proportion of the artworks produced throughout the century of the avant-gardes, the isms, and postmodernism may disappear, just as the hegemonic art of earlier eras has faded from view. Only a small number will endure and connect with the art of the future. These are works that contain within themselves, beyond the oscillations of changing taste, a permanent time and a permanent spirit of revolt.

The exhibition Permanent Present brings together works by artists who belong to an open system, far removed from easy solutions and inherited conventions. It is an art that was—and continues to be—created through the synthesis of opposites: in a state of waking dream, of fractured syntax, of arte povera, of speaking matter, and of rootedness in the universally ultralocal. It evokes a time of visual impact and illumination in which history and the future converge within an immemorial present.
