The Sign is the Circle. Matt Mullican

We are thrilled to present Matt Mullican’s sixth solo exhibition at ProjecteSD. In over fifty years of artistic career, Matt Mullican (Santa Monica, 1951) has developed a vocabulary and a system of signs and symbols that offer a polyhedric vision of the universe. Systematization, structure and order of his vision of the world, ranging from personal to universal, are central themes in his production.

THE SIGN IS THE CIRCLE is a special collaborative project with Madrid based gallery 1MiraMadrid. To the gallery’s initiative to host a one-time show with Matt Mullican, we came up with the idea to develop “one only” exhibition split in two cities. One held at ProjecteSD in Barcelona, the other at 1MiraMadrid. One same show, one same idea. Two different venues, different works in each gallery. As Álvaro de los Angeles points out in the text he wrote for the exhibition: “This double exhibition functions like an addition of free-standing and irreplaceable parts”.

The figure of the “circle” runs through Mullican’s work since the beginning of his career in the mid 70’s. The exhibition is, thus, a look into the artist’s view of the world through the “circle”. The show will present artworks spaning from Mullican’s drawings of the mid 70’s through his recent series “Things change in Heaven” (2020-2024).
