VIU presenta: El mundo mágico de Lotte

WEDNESDAYS OF SOUND AND BODY – Silent film with sound added live, with Júlia Cruz Sesé, Ro Rapoport and Silustra

Taller de Músics invites Júlia Cruz Sesé and VIU.

VIU is a silent film series with original live music that recalls the old ways of adding music to film, but far from the typical soundtracks that used to accompany the silent films. It seeks to offer a different musical and cinematographic show and to generate a space of intersection and confluence between different disciplines and historical moments, as well as between artists and spectators.

VIU invites you to recover and revisit films created and directed by pioneering women in cinema. It is an original idea by Ro Rapoport, developed in collaboration with the Zumzeig team, a cooperative cinema in the city of Barcelona.

The film material selected for this edition is the work of Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981), a pioneer in short and long animated films with silhouettes. This edition was developed in collaboration with the illustrator Silustra, who also made the poster.

The original live music will be provided by Ro Rapoport, with special guest from Taller de Músics, Júlia Cruz Sesé.

There will be a talk dedicated to the director, her historical context and her way of working and creating. To close the activity, an illustration will be handed out to the audience so that they can take it with them, cut it out, interact with it and make their own animated film.

Lotte Reiniger will always hold a singular place in the history of cinema for being the first to develop a singular art: the creation of animated films made with cut silhouettes that came to life through the cinematographic camera. With just a pair of scissors and some black paper, she could make floating palaces and dancing birds or give shape to evil demons. Her films insinuate more than they reveal, since the director chose to hide or veil the details that could give her creations a conventional realism. That is why Lotte Reiniger’s creations are poetic and rustic in their beauty and are, perhaps today more than ever, of absolute relevance.

“I believe in the truth of fairy-tales more than I believe in the truth in the newspaper.” —Lotte Reiniger
