Almas de Oggún. Carlos Franco

Galería Miguel Marcos presents a new exhibition by Carlos Franco (Madrid, 1951), the eleventh exhibition the gallery has dedicated to the artist. The exhibition brings together a selection of paintings and sculptures and, for the first time within the context of this longstanding relationship, presents his sculptural work. Under the title Almas de Oggún, it offers an opportunity to discover a lesser-known facet of his practice and to delve deeper into some of the motifs and symbols that run throughout his creative universe.

The sculptures emerge directly from drawing and from the desire to transfer the line into space. For Carlos Franco, the difference between drawing on paper, canvas or any other support has never been decisive. Drawing constitutes a form of thought and a tool for constructing images that runs throughout his entire career.

The title of the exhibition, Almas de Oggún, refers to the universe of Yoruba mythology and, specifically, to Oggún, one of the warrior orishas, associated with iron, labour and the transformation of matter. Within the context of the Yoruba religion, his soul refers to the spiritual essence, vital force and mystical foundations of this figure, associated with the indomitable energy of constant work.
