ceramic candleholder flash course

with Maria Roy

The flash ceramics workshop is back so you can make your own candlestick.

Over the course of three sessions, we will delve into the world of high-temperature clay modeling with the aim of creating candlesticks.

Together we will look at some examples, from the most unusual to the most traditional, so that each of us can then experiment and play with the plasticity of clay and its creative power.

The last session will be dedicated to glazes and experimenting with different materials to add color and texture to our pieces.

program

session 1

wednesday, march 11, from 11h to 13:30

This first session will serve as an introduction to examples of candlesticks from ethnological archives and basic modeling techniques: slab, coil, and solid modeling. We will end the session by starting to model our candlesticks.

session 2

thursday, march 12, from 11h to 13:30

During this session, we will continue modeling the candlesticks and introduce decorative techniques to finish them.

session 3

wednesday, march 18, from 11h to 13:30h

During the last session, we will prepare glazes from raw materials and oxides and apply them to the candlesticks to give them an extra layer that not only adds color and texture, but also protects and waterproofs them.

Maria Roy is an artist and ceramist who works with both traditional and experimental craft techniques to explore, understand, and assimilate the world around her. Her main area of study is earth, understood as a living material that narrates the history, politics, and ecology of its environment. Her works translate the very materiality offered by the soil, creating sculptures that reflect the local geographies in which they are developed.

Investigating ceramics as an archaeological medium, Maria aims to recover narratives that connect us to our environment through objects and their materialities. With a practice rooted in pedagogy, Maria regularly teaches ceramics workshops, teaching, learning, and collaborating with local communities to explore their connection to the land.
