Claudia Terstappen studied sculpture in relation to architecture and photography at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf/Germany. Her career has led her to work and live in Düsseldorf, London, New York, Hong Kong, and Barcelona before moving to Australia at the end of 2004. Since 2018, she has divided her practice between Melbourne and Barcelona. Since the 1980s, her work has been exhibited internationally, and her pieces are included in many museum collections.

Claudia uses sculpture, photography, and video to express her ideas in a visual language that is intensely shaped by our natural environment.

The exhibition “The Theater of Forms” brings together a selection of landscape photographs and ceramic sculptures that establish connections between surfaces, structures, and natural forms. Her photographs are a direct response to her experience of being “in the mountains,” while her sculptural works translate that experience into new forms. Here, color plays an important role; it serves to camouflage the origin of the forms and fetishize the work as an object of desire.

Both works fragment nature by isolating parts of it, thus drawing our attention to the mystery, power, and diversity of the forms that build the essence of our existence.
