Last Friday, we inaugurated “Ephemeral Beings” with the Danish artist duo, comprised of visual artist Anders Bigum and designer Gry Björge.

Their ephemeral sculptures are photographed before disintegrating in their natural surroundings, forming part of their larger project “Beings That Do Not Exist Have No Name.” This work challenges the conventional notion of names as mere verbal labels, suggesting that names can transcend into visual incarnations filled with symbolism and essence. By questioning the meaning of “being” and “existence,” the artists propose that when something exists in our imagination, it acquires a form of reality.

Bigum+Björge meticulously sculpt these ephemeral beings with elements found in nature, highlighting nature’s profound influence on the creation of these beings. Inspired by folklore traditions, they use tales and myths to illuminate the mysteries of the unknown.

Recognizing the interconnection between their work and nature, Bigum+Björge employ non-toxic photographic processes. They use alternative developing techniques that reduce water consumption, ensuring their artistic work causes the least possible harm to the environment. The “Ephemeral Beings” exhibition not only explores the intersection between imagination and reality but also adopts a sustainable approach in the creation of each piece. It invites viewers to reflect on both the power of storytelling and the importance of environmental conservation. Through their images of ephemeral beings, Bigum+Björge invite us to a realm where nature intertwines with tales and imagination.
