Out of Service. A programme of digital projects featuring Silvia Binda, Jonas Lund, Laura Paloma, Nastja Säde Rönkkö, Mario Santamaría, and Ezequiel Soriano + Carlos Carbonell
ONLINEThere is a moment each year when Cultural Rizoma’s activity comes to a halt. It is precisely during this interval that Out of Service emerges: a programme of digital and hybrid artistic practices that questions, displaces and renders visible the logics of productivity that organise our time.
The programme focuses on what often remains outside formal cultural programming: unprofitable time, waiting, the measurement of productivity, disconnection, and the intermediate zones between work, leisure and availability.
Out of Service reclaims vacation time as a space of symbolic and contradictory production. The programme proposes a series of online artistic interventions that traverse Cultural Rizoma’s usual communication and activity platforms (social media, email, website and streaming), proposing alternative uses of these tools, rethinking their normative rhythms and regimes of responsibility, and the imaginaries of productivity that sustain them.
The first edition brings together works by Laura Paloma, who temporarily takes over Cultural Rizoma’s Instagram account; Mario Santamaría, who intervenes in the automatic email response system used by its staff; Jonas Lund, with an online piece on the repetitive rhythms of contemporary labour; Silvia Binda, who reflects via streaming on the temporality of computational systems; Ezequiel Soriano and Carlos Carbonell, with an intervention on automation, literature and creativity; and Nastja Säde Rönkkö, who documents in video her experience of spending six months completely disconnected from the Internet. Six different ways of interrogating digital technologies and the ways in which they shape our experience of time, work and rest.
