Fora de Si

Drawing on the concept of the expanded field formulated by Rosalind E. Krauss in Sculpture in the Expanded Field (1979), Fora de Si is situated within a critical tradition that understands artistic and spatial practices as fields that overflow their original disciplinary boundaries, defined more by relationships, frictions and transfers than by stable categories. In the current context of digitalisation, the mass circulation of images and the constant interconnection of languages, these practices operate within a hybrid ecology in which architecture, sculpture, landscape, art and visual culture mutually contaminate one another, generating new forms of production, perception and spatial thought.

In Barcelona, this process has intensified since the democratic transition and, especially, since the cultural opening of the 1990s, shaping a creative scene marked by the critical rereading of tradition, the reinvention of methodologies, and experimentation with materials, formats and spaces. In this context, many practitioners work across disciplines, moving naturally between art, architecture, installation, performance, landscape and visual culture.

The third edition of Fora de Si (curated by Arnau Pascual and Miquel Ruiz -h3o-) adopts this open and non-normative framework and presents itself as a curatorial investigation mapping Barcelona’s contemporary creative ecosystem. Through archives, maps, materials, images and audiovisual records, the project seeks to make visible the practices, processes and relationships that define the present, beyond finished objects or closed discourses.

The exhibition will include the participation of the artists from the two previous editions of Fora de Si (Setmanes de l’Arquitectura 2024–2025) and will bring in twelve new voices from emerging artists and architects, with the aim of tracing points of contact in the aesthetic, conceptual, ecological, performative and social experiences linked to the conception of space. Monica Lek, Pau Aulí, Marc Salicru, Alicia Vogel, Agnes Essonti, TorresBago, Júlia Nueno, Oriol Arnedo, Roger Serret, Goig, Blanca Arias and Anna Irina will share fragments of their creative processes to reveal the implicit tangencies between the city’s artistic and architectural ecosystem.

Alongside the exhibition, Fora de Si will unfold through a cycle of six performative dialogues in the garden of the H2O gallery, conceived as encounters between artists who, working in pairs, will share methodologies, influences and shifts between practices. These dialogues will be accompanied by urban walks allowing visitors to get to know the participating artists and architects first-hand, as well as the spaces in which they develop their work, reinforcing the situated and relational dimension of the project.
