Gemma París. Als marges

Als marges is a community-based artistic project developed by Gemma París within the Eixart. Art and Health programme, bringing contemporary art, community health and territory into dialogue. The project has been shaped through processes of meeting, walking and shared observation with women residents of Lleida’s Bordeta–Magraners neighbourhood.

The proposal starts from an attention to margins—of territory, of productive time, of the norm—as spaces of resistance and potential. So-called “weeds” become a metaphor for forms of life and knowledge that grow beyond human control. Through drawing, sewing and the transmission of vernacular knowledge, Als marges creates a space of relationship, care and resilience that challenges a utilitarian view of the world.

Gemma París develops an artistic practice focused on the relationship between nature, resilience, territory and processes of knowledge transmission. For her, drawing is a tool for thinking and a strategy for reimagining a sensorial relationship with the environment. In her projects, pictorial space is conceived as a residual—or potential—space, in dialogue with vacant lots and urban edges. Her trajectory includes exhibition projects in institutions and art centres, as well as grants and research residencies, consolidating a practice situated between art, mediation and research.
