What does it mean to photograph intimate violence? And how can such violence be represented without becoming complicit in its repetition? Donna Ferrato’s work is rooted in these questions and in a career spanning more than four decades, dedicated to documenting violence hidden within the domestic sphere. Her photography is also a testimony to the struggle for rights and to resistance against structural violence. Her work does not seek to beautify violence or turn the people she photographs into victims. Her images act as a direct form of resistance against patriarchy.

The book Living with the Enemy helped bring domestic violence into the public sphere in the United States and foster a social awareness that had not previously existed. The project also contributed to the social and political support that made possible the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994. Later, in Love and Lust, Ferrato explored sexual freedom and desire within liberal communities, expanding her work to encompass other aspects of the female experience. Holy brings together this tension between violence, love, desire, fury and lucidity, presenting photography as a tool for resistance and transformation.

DONNA FERRATO

Donna Ferrato has spent more than four decades working to transform society’s perception of violence that takes place in the private sphere. Her camera has documented violence hidden behind the doors of homes and helped turn these experiences into a visible and public reality. She founded a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness of domestic violence, fundraising for victims’ shelters and promoting public education about this issue around the world. Living With the Enemy, published by Aperture and reissued four times, is one of her most emblematic works and a landmark of humanist photography. Her photographs contributed to the social and political support that led to the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994, federal legislation that transformed the United States’ response to domestic violence and sexual assault.

TOMEU COLL

Tomeu Coll first approached photography through his interest in discovering distant places around the world. This curiosity later developed into a professional practice focused on documenting remote territories. At the same time, he developed a perspective on his own place of origin, which led to the project Badlands, recognised by Smithsonian Magazine and recently exhibited at the Cortona On The Move festival. His projects have been exhibited in Shanghai, Beijing, Cologne, Paris, Rome and Arles. He also collaborates with publications including Stern, Der Spiegel, The Guardian and L’Illustre, among others, and works on silenced conflicts and forgotten territories. He has been collaborating with Donna Ferrato for twenty years, and together they co-founded the workshops Erotic Eye Trilogy and Sacred Eye. In recent years, he has expanded this research to include curatorial work.
