The Production of Otherness
When we examine the process of creating objects, cities, songs, monuments, and clothing, we recognize that it is influenced by a complex set of social and cultural norms. We often take these norms for granted, simultaneously defining what is considered “normal” and what is excluded or marginalized. These norms emerge in response to specific needs, but by whom, when, and why have they been established across the fields of design, architecture, and art?
This exhibition delves into the margins of this so-called normality, where the production of otherness takes place. By showcasing the work of international artists, designers, and creators, it aims to clarify the processes of differentiation, segregation, categorization, and hierarchy that underpin the aesthetic and cultural values of the Global North, which have been imposed through territorial, cultural, and social colonization.
