Unknown name is a performance that explores grief through memory, absence and disappearance. The piece emerges from a body of work in which the artist experiments with performative methodologies to investigate the ways in which grief can be inhabited and represented.

In this action, a ghostly figure —the artist herself transformed into a pond— becomes the focal point of a passage between the bodily, the poetic and the spectral. The piece reflects on what remains after disappearance and on the traces of absence in bodies, spaces and memory.

Mai Bach-Ngoc Nguyen is an (in)disciplined Vietnamese artist based in “where the river narrows”, Canada. Her practice explores passage, absence and disappearance, as well as colonial and cultural legacies, putting poetic gestures, non-gestures and institutional spaces to the test.

The artist will be in residence at Homesession in October 2026, as part of a collaboration with Centre Clark (Quebec).
