Exhibition We Are Not Afraid, We Are

“We Are Not Afraid, We Are” is a project that recovers and reivindicates the historical memory of the LGTBIQ+ community in Catalonia. Its title draws on the defiant chant that echoed through Las Ramblas in Barcelona during the first LGTBIQ+ demonstration in the Spanish State in 1977.

Promoted by El Catalejo, the project explores the period between late Francoism and the democratic transition (1960–1985), with the aim of reconstructing a collective narrative around the struggle for rights and visibility of the community. It does so through the lived experiences, memories, and personal archives of individuals who lived through or directly witnessed that historical moment. The exhibition brings into dialogue the intimate sphere—individual memories and personal archives—with the social and political context preserved in institutional and specialized collections. This approach makes it possible to understand how collective identity is built from personal experiences, giving voice to trajectories that have often been rendered invisible.

The project also seeks to establish an intergenerational dialogue by recovering historical traces and offering a space for participants to share their own materials and narratives, thus shaping a living mosaic of the LGTBIQ+ movement in our territory.

About El Catalejo
El Catalejo is an organization dedicated to promoting community-based projects through collaborative artistic practices. It operates at the intersection of sociocultural context, image, and visual narratives, with the aim of fostering cultural rights. Co-directed by Vanessa Roca and Alberto Martín, the association is characterized by a working methodology based on co-creation and active participation, acting as a mediator among the various stakeholders involved.
