Open Studio: Hiram Latorre

On February 28, from 12 to 3 pm, the Brazilian artist Hiram Latorre will present a series of pictorial works created during the two months of his residency at Homesession.

Saturday, February 28
12-3 pm
Carrer Creu dels Molers, 15 (Poble Sec, Barcelona)

Latorre’s practice draws on memories of places he has passed through and on emotional recollections that he translates into painting with a poetic and evocative tone. His recent works engage with themes and classical genres from art history, such as interior painting and still lifes. In them, he combines remembered and imagined elements, articulated from multiple perspectives, to construct an intimate atmosphere reminiscent of a 19th-century novel or a carefully curated photo album.

In the sequence of paintings developed at Homesession, he constructs architecturally ambiguous scenes in which linear patterns coexist with organic ornamental motifs and flowers, already present in sculptural pieces he created previously. From this dialogue emerge interconnected compositions distinguished by a bold use of color, where earthy ranges intertwine with vibrant accents.

The artist works with the encaustic technique—a mixture of oil paint and beeswax—which gives the works a singular texture, great pictorial density, and an opaque quality that intensifies their material presence.
