Unfunny Paintings. Matti Schulz
La Plataforma presents Unfunny Paintings, Matti Schulz’s first solo exhibition at La Plataforma and in Barcelona.
The exhibition brings together a body of portraits, self-portraits, and scenes featuring iconic figures and everyday situations transformed through irony. From Cristiano Ronaldo in Mallorca to Rosalía at Berghain, alongside half-naked bodies devoted to the cult of self-optimization and a group of Serious Germans rigidly occupying a beach beneath an intensely red sky, Schulz constructs images that oscillate between the comic and the unsettling. Beneath the apparent lightness of these scenes emerges a subtle critique of contemporary society that avoids offering definitive answers, leaving viewers to decide where the joke begins and where reflection ends.
