Everyday, Everywhere, Everyone. Miroslav Tichý

On the centenary of the birth of Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý (1926-2011), Panoràmic presents an exhibition devoted to his extraordinary body of work, which has often been understood through the fascinating yet controversial framework of marginal or outsider art, but deserves to be considered from a broader and more open perspective. His work should be understood as that of an absolute dissident — politically, socially and technologically.

The technical limitations that account for the rough, imperfect character of his work are also fundamental to the definition of his artistic language, in which each photograph acquires the singularity of a unique painting. His work cannot be considered without constantly acknowledging its connections with sculpture, painting, alchemy, the fetish, voyeurism and social documentary.

To exhibit Tichý this time is to champion the singularity of an obstinate gaze and an irreducible artistic impulse, and to marvel once again at how photography, in its fragility and its potential for manipulation, can yield its most compelling results.
