Un solo de boca (‘A mouth solo’). A workshop with Orne Cabrita

In 1977, when guitarist Yomo Toro failed to show up to record his four-person guitar solo for the song ‘Buscando Guayaba’, Rubén Blades improvised an historic mouth solo, which he then had to perform at every concert on the Siembra tour. The ability to improvise and know how to dance a few incidental steps is not only a necessary skill for travelling through the Caribbean, but also for narrating it.

This workshop navigates through the flashes of dizzying orality, beginning with Brathwaite’s drum poems and moving on to the hyperlyricism of salsa and various visual manifestations of everlasting reverberation. Drawing on findings from the Hamaca archive, social media and personal archives, we will create a collective, rhizomatic syllabus exploring rhythm as a methodology of resistance and contagion.

Target audience: The workshop is aimed at artists wishing to explore the sound and cadence of Caribbean storytelling and its ability not only to accompany images, but also to evoke and preserve images. Priority will be given to artists from the diaspora and migrants from the Global South.

Date and time: 29 September and 1 October from 5 pm to 8 pm
Place: La Capella (c/ Hospital 56, Barcelona)
Price: free with prior enrolment
