UnaDonaUna · AutoRetratRetratat. Mariaelena Roqué
Mariaelena Roqué is an artist who defies easy categorisation, yet she is a key figure in the context of contemporary Catalan art. Historically, art criticism has framed her work under the umbrella of the Carles Santos Company.
She has been “temporarily trapped in the blind spot of the patriarchal narrative of art” (Griselda Pollock), despite being a powerful artist in her own right, whose practice spans visual art, sculpture, performance, and stage action. Her work challenges gender roles and critiques patriarchal society. She explores the female body as a site of memory, identity, and transformation. Her works dissolve the human silhouette, proposing a “posthuman” condition that questions anthropocentrism.
The exhibition includes performances and conversations with curators and critics that further enrich the artistic experience.
RocioSantaCruz’s project creates space for another silenced voice, reaffirming Roqué as an essential figure in feminist and contemporary art.
