Like other artists of his generation, American artist Bruce Nauman rejects the traditional idea of the artwork as an independent object and advocates for an art created through the experience of his own body. In the late 1960s, he began a series of works in which he performed different activities in front of a fixed camera, thus introducing the artist’s corporeality, experience and real-time manipulation into the field of art. Within this context of renewal, between 1967 and 1968 he recorded Art Make-Up, a project comprising four films in which the artist applies different shades of make-up to his face and torso. Entitled White, Pink, Green and Black, Nauman masks himself until his identity becomes blurred. By erasing himself, both metaphorically and literally, he explores what he calls “withdrawal as a form of art.”
Un museu fora del museu (A Museum Outside the Museum) proposes taking works from the MACBA Collection and Archive outside the museum and presenting them in places of social interaction, in order to foster different and closer relationships, in collaboration with the SPEAV network (Public System of Visual Arts Facilities of Catalonia) as part of the celebration of the museum’s 30th anniversary.
Un museu fora del museu (A Museum Outside the Museum) puts forward the idea of a multiple museum shaped around a community of voices. “The” museum becomes “a” museum that seeks to foster dialogue and interaction with the aim of encouraging perspectives beyond the usual ones. It is about bringing art closer and offering singular contexts for artworks, within a field of action that encompasses the entire territory.
