Public Image. The Surplus Value of Representation #2
As part of ARTefACTe, Núria Güell presents at ADN Galería a performance that reflects on the fetishization of the artist’s figure and the notions of authenticity linked to her profession.
When it comes to artistic practice, does the who of authorship matter more than the what and the how of the work? Is it possible that, after moving away from the concept of representation in practice, we have transferred representation to the figure of the artist? Do art institutions demand that we self-perform? Could it be that the artist’s symbolic capital depends more on their public image than on their practice? Might institutions seek value in a container more in tune with the spirit of the times, such as a body or an identity? Have we, as artists, become the objects to be exhibited? Are artworks or artists being displayed? Are we, as artists, the product?
