The exhibition project; Infralocus. The 90s in Girona, a decade of 20 Years; explores the culture of this historical period and the various places where it sought to make itself visible. We speak, of course, of institutional and/or normalized spaces (Municipal Halls, Casa de Cultura, Fontana d’Or, art galleries, and foundations), but also, and especially, of all those infralocus (often bars and nightclubs) that culture colonized without control or premeditation.
In short: this exhibition aims to horizontally showcase the cultural life of the nineties without relying on the usual hierarchies, starting with those that distinguish high culture from popular culture, and even more so, those that discriminate between different forms of activism (feminism, LGBTI, pacifism, environmentalism) or everything that occurs spontaneously, ephemerally, and on the margins of the official circuit.
In this sense, the Girona of the nineties provides us with the perfect example of how what we call culture emerges, and at times crystallizes, in multiple layers: the university, alternative cultural spaces, certain streets like Nou del Teatre or neighborhoods like Pont Major were epicenters of a vitality unprecedented in the rest of the city. Visual arts, music, fashion, performance, literature, philosophy, photography, and leisure blended together with a naturalness that today might seem surprising.
