Gathering on Contextual Practices

Nature, a stage (+)?

What is the role of context? Who accompanies these projects, and how? What timeframes are necessary to develop them? What happens to the symbolic materials that are set in circulation? What comes before, what remains afterward? How do modes of production change or adapt in these practices?

We open a space for reflection around contextual artistic practices, which this edition invites us to question: “Nature, a stage (+)?”

We often talk about indoor and street performances, but the performative act also moves to places considered ‘natural’, sometimes within the cities themselves. What kind of relationship is established with these places? Are they simply a stage, or an active agent in the works connected to them? Do we know these places as well as we know our theatres?

From the intersection between contemporary artistic practice and context, a field of work emerges that unfolds social, political, human and non-human, rhythmic, atmospheric and ecological dimensions. We propose a space from different approaches (creation, programming, curating, mediation, academia…) to meet in nature and engage in conversation.

The excitation of the landscape: camouflage
Óscar Bueno

The excitation of the landscape takes shape through encounters, questions, music, publications, and performative pieces that explore our relationship with territory.

“To move the landscape is to move our gaze and our listening. It means increasing the visual and sonic saturation of what we know in order to give it tension and energy. It is about creating a slight distance from the familiar toward an open space for other ways of being. It is about relating elements that move our eyes, our skin, our ears. In essence, it is about producing a sensitive and conceptual vibration toward the landscapes we attend to.”

This excitation is composed of three pieces, each corresponding to a specific moment of the day (midday, afternoon, and night) and to a different way of relating to the landscape through a sensory and performative experience.

This first piece takes place in a natural space where a river once flowed but no longer does, whether due to terrain changes or seasonal shifts. The excitation focuses on the idea of camouflage and on how to generate a soundscape that is both artificial and natural, performed live within the environment.

Conceptualization: Ariadna Rodríguez and Iñaki Álvarez (nyamnyam) | With the participation of Elvira Prado-Fabregat, artist, cultural activist, and researcher in ecocriticism; Joan Montserrat, forestry technician at the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park; Javi Cruz, artist and programmer of the project “Bosque real” (Madrid); Óscar Bueno, artist, performer, and musician.

Attendance includes the opening of The excitation of the landscape: Camouflage by Óscar Bueno, as well as lunch. A proposal that invites participants to continue the journey in the afternoon in Porqueres and Banyoles, to enjoy the remaining two parts of The excitation of the landscape, among other festival activities.
