War and the Women of Mercè Rodoreda
With Flowers and Travels, cabosanroque concludes its trilogy of immersive installations devoted to the free interpretation of works by Catalan writers in order to address universal themes. After Joan Brossa and Jacint Verdaguer, they have now created a fantastic forest inspired by Travels and Flowers by Mercè Rodoreda.
Flowers and Travels is a sound art exhibition project that draws on Rodoreda’s book to reflect on war and its consequences through the eyes of women and children; on how trauma and the passage of time manipulate memory, altering lived experience until it ultimately constructs something very close to fiction. And on how only through poetry is it possible to speak about horror. This exhibition proposes new approaches to the thought and complexity of a writer such as Mercè Rodoreda.
In addition to Rodoreda’s books and lived experience, the exhibition incorporates testimonies of women and children who experienced the Second World War, collected by Nobel Prize laureate Svetlana Aleksiévitx.
The exhibition project has been produced by cabosanroque, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the Teatro Español, the Festival Temporada Alta, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, the Festival Grec, the Théâtre Garonne scène européenne and the Fundació Lluís Coromina, with the support of the Institut Català d’Empreses Culturals.
The adaptation of the project was made possible thanks to the Directorate-General for Cultural Promotion and Libraries of the Department of Culture, through its Travelling Exhibitions Programme.
