Anyway, Stuff. By Irena Visa. Part of the exhibition cycle “Potential legacies”, curated by Oriol Fontdevila

It was in the summer of 2025, while taking part in a creative residency at the Casa Forestal de Sant Martí d’Empúries, that Irena Visa (Banyoles, 1985) felt the painful sting of turning forty.

The wealth of objects on display at the Museu Arqueològic d’Empúries led the artist to view her own possessions as signs of having perhaps lived a less interesting life than the one she had envisioned at the beginning of her youth. Witnessing the vastness of the archaeological site of Empúries, whose grounds, after more than a century of excavations, still remain largely undiscovered today, made her think of the broad range of experiences that, once past the midpoint of her own life, she could foresee would also remain unexcavated.

“Anyway, Stuff” takes an irreverent and humorous look at practices such as museology, archaeology, and the idea of a trousseau. Its aim is to strip the desire for eternal life of its grandeur and return it to the realm of everyday life. Poised between popular imagination and science fiction, the vampire operates here as a figure that brings archaeology itself to ruin, while at the same time rendering meaningless the existential assessment that accompanies midlife crises.

“Potential legacies” is an exhibition cycle organised by Bòlit, Centre d’Art Contemporani de Girona, which, throughout 2026 and 2027, presents a series of newly commissioned artistic projects based on case studies concerning heritage controversies that originate in, or extend into, the counties of Girona.
