Land of the Living. Jake Aikman

Land of the Living is an investigation by Jake Aikman into a space that is simultaneously physical and cerebral, where orientation and perception remain in a constant state of tension between presence and dissolution. The title refers to the “land of the living,” an expression that, rather than affirming a stable or fixed condition, shifts experience toward a territory of continuous oscillation, shaped by uncertainty, transformation, and a structural sense of mystery.

In this body of work, Aikman does not describe a place in a literal sense, but constructs a suspended mental geography in which traditional coordinates of reading are progressively destabilised. Painting operates as a field of friction between the recognisable and the elusive, between the formation of an image and its immediate unravelling.

These paintings expand the exhibition’s universe by functioning as fragments of a single perceptual system, where the boundary between land and sea, figure and ground, appearance and disappearance, remains deliberately unstable. The image is not presented as assertion, but as a transitional state, a surface on which perception reorganises itself without ever reaching definitive fixation.
