The Forgetting and Memory of Girona in the Andalusi Period, a conversation between Sara Ouhaddou and Dolors Bramon

Girona’s Islamic heritage has been subject to a process of deliberate forgetting that probably originated in the Inquisition’s actions in the 16th century and has continued to the present day. Historian Dolors Bramon and artist Sara Ouhaddou will discuss the difficulties that still remain today in recognising the legacy of al-Andalus in the very territories that formed part of it between the 8th and 15th centuries, in connection with the project Not Everything That Is Said Finds Someone Who Wants to Listen; Not Everything That Finds Someone Who Wants to Listen Is Said at the Right Time (2026), which Ouhaddou is presenting at the Chapel of Sant Nicolau.

Dolors Bramon holds a PhD in Semitic Philology and Medieval History and is Professor Emerita of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Barcelona. Her research focuses on religious minorities and the Islamic past of Catalan-speaking territories from a historical and philological perspective.

Sara Ouhaddou is a French artist born into a Moroccan family. This cultural duality has led her to understand artistic practice as a form of dialogue. Through her projects, Ouhaddou seeks a balance between the traditional forms of Moroccan art and the conventions of contemporary art, with the aim of reframing forgotten cultural realities.

This activity is linked to the celebration of the city’s bimillennium, «Girona, 2,100 Years», and is part of the exhibition cycle Llegats en potència.
