Soweto-Durban. Cheriese Dilrajh, Musa N. Nxumalo

Soweto-Durban brings together the work of Cheriese Dilrajh and Musa N. Nxumalo through two perspectives on the South African experience, connecting landscape, memory, youth, and identity. Between these two places, the exhibition explores how a history shaped by colonialism, apartheid, and their consequences continues to be present in the land and in everyday life.

In Dilrajh’s video essays, Durban emerges as a landscape steeped in memory, where colonial, family, and personal histories overlap. Nxumalo, meanwhile, works with photography and moving images to explore the experiences of a generation born free and the identity of a society undergoing profound transformations.

The exhibition becomes a meeting point between the two practices. Through images, landscapes, bodies, and lived experiences, both artists develop personal and fragmentary ways of recording and conveying a history that does not belong solely to the past. Soweto-Durban thus offers a journey through two perspectives on a generation that inherits a complex history, while also creating its own images, memories, and forms of belonging.
