This Was Not The Plan. Jet Snaith, Leonie Gemsjäger

There’s something comforting about plans. They impose order on chaos, promise a neat conclusion and let us pretend we’re in control. But it’s in the detour that things really come alive. THIS WAS NOT THE PLAN is the phrase that surfaces when the script breaks down. When the idea of stability no longer organises experience. When the house doesn’t quite protect us, memory refuses to be filed away, femininity won’t fit the part it’s been given and the image stops obeying the clarity expected of it. This exhibition brings together Jet Snaith and Leonie Gemsjäger not on the basis of formal similarity, but through a more precise affinity: both work at the moment when the familiar becomes unstable. In both practices there is a rupture of the script, although each approaches it from radically different registers. Jet does so through self-exposure and sarcasm; Leonie, through restraint and a quiet unease. Jet pushes outwards, Leonie inwards. One ignites, the other whispers.
