Volta. Elvira Amor
Elvira Amor’s practice is grounded in a profound belief in painting’s ability to generate meaning through its own means. Colour, light, rhythm, and form articulate a language that finds its mode of expression within itself and, much like music, speaks directly to sensory experience. Painting becomes a place where meaning remains open, allowing perception to linger and find new paths.
Throughout her practice, painting has gradually extended beyond the limits of the canvas to inhabit other forms and surfaces. Canvases, works on paper, aluminium sculptures, and interventions made directly onto architecture all belong to the same visual vocabulary. While each work retains its autonomy, it is through the dialogue between them that a shared grammar begins to emerge, an experience that is ultimately completed in the observer’s mind. It is there, in the intervals, along the edges of space, and in the act of looking, that painting takes its fullest form.
This exhibition was shaped, in part, during the artist’s residency at Alzueta Gallery in La Bisbal d’Empordà. The distance from her usual studio, the silence, the stone architecture, the humidity, and the unhurried rhythm of the surrounding landscape are not represented directly, yet they permeate the way the works relate both to one another and to the space itself. The experience of inhabiting an unfamiliar place became a different way of listening to painting.
The mural intervention created specifically for the exhibition extends this sense of continuity. Colour moves beyond the picture plane to accompany the architecture, activating corners, columns, arches, and planes that cease to function as mere background and instead become integral elements of the composition, transforming the atmosphere generated between them. The work does not end with each individual canvas but unfolds throughout the viewer’s journey and in the changing light, as though the entire space could itself be understood as an expanded painting.
The exhibition’s title reflects this open condition. Volta evokes the arch and architecture, but also the idea of a journey, a return, and the possibility of shifting one’s point of view. A word that, much like Elvira Amor’s paintings, unfolds its meaning through the many relationships it is capable of activating.
