Challenging gender beyond borders
What Is Gender? is a nomadic, interdisciplinary art project and itinerant exhibition platform that travels the world to foster dialogue through art. As an artistic movement, it brings together a growing community of artists committed to difference, tolerance, and diversity.
The project invites reflection on gender, identity, social roles, marginalisation, and belonging, always grounded in local voices and collaborative processes. Having already travelled to Geneva and Istanbul, the platform now lands in Barcelona—marking its debut in both Catalonia and Spain.
This edition aims to connect the global debate on gender with the local Catalan context, encouraging the active participation of artists based in the region who work through diversity, critical thinking, and contemporary creation. The exhibition highlights local voices within an international framework, promoting visibility for the plurality of genders, identities, and backgrounds present in Catalonia today.Through installations, videos, paintings, and performances, What Is Gender? challenges stereotypes and opens new spaces for artistic and social reflection. The project promotes equality, freedom of expression, inclusion, and cultural diversity, serving as a bridge between local creation and international networks while fostering opportunities for collaboration and shared reflection.
