Layers of Noise – Lucinda Lansill & Lasha Rostobaia

Layers of Noise presents the work developed during the artistic residency of Lucinda Lansill (New York City) and Lasha Rostobaia (Georgia) at Espai Souvenir. Through painting and textile, both artists explore memory and identity as fragmented landscapes shaped by layers, veils, and absences.

Lucinda Lansill shows a series of paintings based on her own photographs, transformed through a limited palette, layered surfaces, and successive manipulations. Her work investigates how images can be reinterpreted until they lose their original meaning or acquire a new one. Fascinated by how we perceive and process images, Lansill offers a visual critique of looking, and the power of painting to unsettle, alter, or intensify a scene.

Her compositions, dominated by blues, reddish hues, and yellows, reveal a disciplined approach that creates an atmosphere of estrangement. Female figures, taxidermied animals behind glass, and decontextualized scenes reappear as motifs oscillating between irony and melancholy. Her paintings do not merely represent but manipulate: they expose the artificial within the seemingly authentic, highlighting layers of construction in both image and identity.

Lasha Rostobaia’s work combines layered translucent fabrics, blurred silhouette drawings, clay, and metallic textures to evoke a fragile, evolving sensory memory. Inspired by childhood memories, folklore, and myths, he constructs scenes suspended between the personal and collective, where memory is a living, unstable, poetic space.

His pieces inhabit a dreamlike realm where images appear veiled, displaced, or partially erased. The overlapping materials and forms create a visual rhythm suggesting both persistence and loss — what endures and what fades. In dialogue with found photographs that he paints and reinterprets, his work questions how memories are constructed, transformed, and reimagined in an intimate and shared process.

This exhibition invites a sensitive dialogue about what remains unseen yet lingers, trembles, and reappears in every gesture, stroke, and texture.
